Just five days after setting the world’s fastest 100m time of 2025, Ghanaian sprint sensation Abdul-Rasheed Saminu has been overtaken by American Trayvon Bromell in a thrilling showdown at the Golden Gala in Rome.

Saminu electrified the athletics world last week by clocking a blistering 9.86 seconds at the NCAA Division I East First Rounds semifinals, shattering Benjamin Azamati’s Ghanaian national record of 9.90 seconds set in 2022. But his time at the top was short-lived.

On 6 June, Bromell stormed to victory at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico, pipping Saminu’s mark by 0.02 seconds with a 9.84-second dash.

The 29-year-old American left Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme (9.99 seconds) and Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala (10.01 seconds) trailing in his wake.

Bromell’s return to dominance

Bromell, who shares the joint sixth-fastest 100m time in history (9.76 seconds) with fellow Americans Christian Coleman and Fred Kerley, proved he remains a force to be reckoned with.

His latest win marks a strong comeback after injuries disrupted his career in recent years.

Saminu’s meteoric rise

Despite slipping to second-fastest in the world this year, Saminu’s 2025 season has been nothing short of spectacular.

The Ghanaian has smashed the national record, dethroned Azamati as Ghana’s top-ranked sprinter—a title held since 2021—and surged 14 places in the global rankings. He now sits 37th worldwide and ninth in Africa.

What’s next for Saminu?

With the Tokyo 2025 World Championships approaching, Saminu’s record-breaking form signals Ghana’s growing presence in global sprinting. Athletics fans worldwide will be watching closely to see if he can reclaim the top spot.
