Abdul-Rasheed Saminu smashes national record and topping world rankings
Ghanaian sprinter Abdul-Rasheed Saminu has shattered the men’s 100m national record, clocking a blistering 9.86 seconds at the NCAA Division I East First Rounds semifinals in Florida.
The 21-year-old eclipsed compatriot Benjamin Azamati’s previous record of 9.90 seconds, set in 2022, by 0.04 seconds—cementing his status as Ghana’s fastest man.
Saminu’s electrifying run not only secured his place in the finals but also guaranteed his spot at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.
A record-breaking season
Saminu’s time is now the fastest in the world this year, surpassing South Africa’s Akani Simbine (9.90 seconds) and American Trayvon Bromell (9.91 seconds).
It also brings him tantalisingly close to the NCAA record (9.82 seconds), held by Christian Coleman.
The young sprinter has been in sensational form in 2025, climbing 12 places in the World Athletics rankings since January.
Currently ranked 38th globally, he has consistently delivered standout performances, including a wind-assisted 9.87 seconds at the Pepsi Florida Relays in April.
Ghana’s hopes for World Championships glory
After missing the World Relays in China earlier this month, Saminu is now poised to lead Ghana’s charge at the World Championships in Tokyo.
With his record-breaking speed, he could be the nation’s best hope for a historic first-ever track medal on the global stage.
What’s next?
All eyes will be on Saminu as he lines up for the NCAA finals—and with momentum on his side, another record could soon fall.
