Guirassy’s double sends Dortmund into Club World Cup quarters
Borussia Dortmund secured their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mexico’s Monterrey in Georgia, thanks to a first-half brace from striker Serhou Guirassy.
The Bundesliga giants struck early at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with Guirassy netting twice inside 24 minutes—both set up by Karim Adeyemi.
The Guinean forward’s clinical finishing proved decisive as Dortmund held off a late Monterrey fightback to book a blockbuster last-eight tie against Real Madrid.
Guirassy at the double
Dortmund needed just 14 minutes to break the deadlock. A slick one-two between Adeyemi and Guirassy on the edge of the box carved open Monterrey’s defence, allowing the striker to slot home at the near post past goalkeeper Esteban Andrada.
Ten minutes later, Adeyemi was the provider again. The German forward surged down the right, drawing two defenders before squaring to Guirassy, who made no mistake with another composed finish.
Monterrey pulled one back after the break when a defensive header from Dortmund’s Daniel Svensson deflected off Érick Aguirre, falling kindly for Germán Berterame to nod into an empty net.
The Liga MX side nearly snatched a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time when veteran defender Sergio Ramos powered a header towards the far post—only to see it drift agonisingly wide.
Bellingham brothers clash off
The win sets up a mouthwatering quarter-final against Real Madrid, managed by former Liverpool and Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso.
However, fans hoping for a sibling showdown between Jude and Jobe Bellingham will be disappointed.
Dortmund’s 19-year-old midfielder Jobe, younger brother of Madrid star Jude, picked up a first-half yellow card for a foul on Nelson Deossa.
Having been booked in the group stage against Ulsan HD, the caution triggers an automatic suspension, ruling him out of the clash with his brother’s side.
What’s next?
Dortmund will now prepare for their heavyweight showdown with 15-time European champions Real Madrid, scheduled for this weekend in Atlanta.
Can Niko Kovač’s side continue their Club World Cup journey, or will Alonso’s men prove too strong?
For now, Dortmund fans can celebrate a job well done—with Guirassy’s lethal finishing ensuring their passage into the last eight.
