Ghana has stepped in as the new host of the 2025 African Zone 2 Senior, Junior, and Masters Swimming Championships after Nigeria’s withdrawal, marking a major milestone for the nation’s growing reputation in international sports.

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation (MoSR) met with the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) on Wednesday, 2 July, to finalise preparations for the event, now confirmed for 3-5 October 2025 at the state-of-the-art Borteyman Olympic Aquatic Centre in Accra.

Ghana’s readiness for a continental showpiece

Over 150 elite swimmers from 18+ African nations are expected to compete in the prestigious championship, which will test Ghana’s organisational capabilities and showcase its world-class aquatic facilities.

GSA President Delphina Quaye briefed Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams on progress, including the formation of a Local Organising Committee (LOC) to oversee logistics.

Government backing for a successful event

Minister Adams praised the GSA’s leadership and confirmed Ghana’s readiness to host world-class events, citing the championship as proof of the country’s advancing sports infrastructure.

In a significant boost, the ministry agreed to waive facility fees for the event—provided the venue remains well-maintained.

Adams also pledged full security coordination with the Ghana Police Service and called for strong media partnerships to amplify coverage.

To inspire future talent, he urged collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to involve schools.
