Stacy Konadu Mensah shines at Polish Open
Ghana’s Stacy Konadu Mensah delivered an impressive performance at the 2025 Plock Orlen Polish Open, reaching the quarterfinals in the women’s singles and the semifinals in the doubles at the prestigious International Tennis Federation (ITF) wheelchair tennis tournament held in Warsaw from 22-25 May.
The 29-year-old was Ghana’s sole female representative in the competition, standing out in a team that also included Maclean Atsu Dzidzienyo, Bernard Yawson, and Daniel Laryea, with Kwabena Afriyie Siaw as team manager.
Strong start in singles
Mensah began her singles campaign with a first-round victory after Canadian Frederique Berube Perron retired.
However, her journey was cut short in the quarterfinals by Great Britain’s Ruby Bishop, who dominated with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Bishop went on to claim the tournament title.
Doubles run with Japanese partner ends in semifinals
Teaming up with Japan’s Seira Matsuoka in the women’s doubles, Mensah cruised past Spain’s Laura Sambruno Valero and Lithuania’s Kotryna Zizmaraite 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
But their progress was halted in the semifinals by the British-Dutch duo of Bishop and Donna Broek-Jansen, who secured a 7-5, 6-1 victory before going on to lift the trophy.
Ghana’s men exit early
In the men’s singles, Ghana’s trio faced tough first-round exits. Dzidzienyo fell to Poland’s Jakub Kucinski (6-3, 6-2), while Laryea was defeated by another Pole, Marcin Niepogoda (6-4, 6-2). Yawson suffered a heavy 6-1, 6-0 loss to Germany’s Sven Hiller.
Road to LA 2028 Paralympics continues
The tournament provided crucial ranking points for players aiming to qualify for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
For Mensah and her teammates, the experience in Warsaw will be vital as they work towards securing their spots on the global stage.
