A groundbreaking rugby league tour is set to bridge continents, culture, and community as the ROOTS Rugby Family—an Afro-centric non-profit organisation—heads to Ghana for a week-long celebration of sport, heritage, and unity.

From 23–30 November 2025, the delegation will see its men’s and women’s teams face off against Ghana’s national rugby league sides in three high-profile matches.

But this tour is about more than just rugby—it’s a homecoming, a cultural exchange, and a chance to inspire the next generation of players.

A celebration of sport and heritage

Founded to showcase and develop the rugby league talent of the African diaspora, ROOTS Rugby Family sees this tour as a pivotal moment to strengthen ties between the continent and its global community.

Tiana Granby, President of ROOTS Rugby Family, shared her excitement: “ROOTS Rugby Family is honoured to journey to Ghana this November to compete against the national men’s and women’s rugby league teams in a celebration of culture, sport, and unity.”

“This historic tour represents more than just rugby league—it is a powerful homecoming that strengthens the deep-rooted connections between the African diaspora and the continent. Through these matches, we aim to forge lasting bonds of brotherhood, sisterhood, and shared purpose.”

Ghana’s rugby league ambitions grow

The Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG) has welcomed the tour, seeing it as a key step in growing the sport locally while fostering international solidarity.

Juliana Storey, President of RLFG, said, “We are deeply honoured to welcome the ROOTS Rugby Family to Ghana.”

“This tour is a celebration of shared identity, unity, and the enduring strength of the global African family. We look forward to unforgettable matches, lasting friendships, and the continued growth of rugby league in Ghana and beyond.”

More than just matches: A lasting legacy

Beyond the pitch, the tour will feature training clinics for young players, school visits to inspire future talent, and coaching workshops to develop local skills.

These initiatives aim to leave a lasting impact on Ghana’s rugby league landscape, creating pathways for growth and long-term partnerships.
