Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has made it clear he wants Thomas Partey to stay at the club beyond this summer – but with the midfielder’s contract expiring and interest from Barcelona and Saudi Pro League sides, his future remains uncertain.

The 31-year-old, who joined the Gunners from Atlético Madrid in 2020, has been a key figure in Arteta’s squad this season, making 51 appearances across multiple positions – including at right-back.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s final Premier League match against Southampton on Sunday, 25 May, Arteta praised Partey’s contributions, calling this his “best season” in terms of consistency and availability.

“Yes, I’d like Thomas Partey to stay and sign a new deal,” the Spaniard said. “I think the way he’s played, performed, his availability has been exceptional and he’s a really important player for us.”

Despite Arteta’s public backing, reports suggest Arsenal are only willing to offer a one-year extension on reduced wages, raising questions over whether Partey will commit his future to the Emirates.

Saudi interest and Barcelona links

The Ghana international has attracted attention from Saudi Pro League clubs, who could offer a lucrative deal, while LaLiga champions Barcelona have also been linked as they look for midfield reinforcements.

Partey’s versatility and experience make him an attractive option, but his preference may hinge on whether Arsenal secure a new agreement before the transfer window opens.

Final game at Southampton?

Sunday’s trip to St Mary’s Stadium could be Partey’s last appearance in an Arsenal shirt. Fans will be watching closely to see if he gets a fitting send-off – or if Arteta’s words signal the start of fresh contract talks.

With seven goal contributions (4 goals, 3 assists) this season, the midfielder has proven his worth. Now, the ball is in Arsenal’s court.
