‘I deserve a chance’ – Kwabena Owusu hits out at Black Stars snub
Forward Kwabena Owusu has hit out at his continued omission from Ghana’s national team, questioning why he’s being overlooked despite his impressive form in Europe.
The 28-year-old, currently on loan at Turkish second-tier side MKE Ankaragücü from Hungarian champions Ferencváros, has netted nine goals and provided three assists in just 15 Trendyol 1. Lig appearances this season.
Speaking exclusively to Pure FM, Owusu voiced his frustration, insisting his performances warrant a recall to the Black Stars.
“I deserve a chance” – Owusu’s plea
“It’s hard to understand,” said Owusu. “I was getting call-ups when I was playing in the lower divisions, but now that I’m at the top level, playing in Europe’s biggest competitions, I’ve been ignored. None of the Black Stars strikers has more goals than me currently.”
The forward, who scored nine times in 15 league games, suggested personal reasons may be behind his exclusion.
“I feel like some people have taken things personally,” he said. “I deserve a chance based on performance alone.”
“They say I’m disrespectful – I want them to show me where I disrespected anyone. I have always given my best and shown respect.”
Past Black Stars involvement
Owusu made his Ghana debut in a 2019 friendly against South Africa before being named in the squad for that year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
The Black Stars were knocked out in the last 16 after a penalty shootout defeat to Tunisia.
Since then, the striker has struggled to break back into the national team setup, despite stints in Spain, Hungary, and now Turkey.
Will Ghana boss listen?
With Ghana preparing for upcoming World Cup qualifiers, Owusu’s strong goal-scoring record could make him a compelling option.
But whether head coach Otto Addo will consider him remains uncertain.
For now, the in-form forward is left waiting—and hoping his performances eventually force a recall.
