Golden Rackets target Davis Cup promotion at Africa Group IV tournament
Ghana’s national tennis team, the Golden Rackets, are gearing up for a high-stakes battle at the Davis Cup Africa Group IV, starting Wednesday, 11 June, in Luanda, Angola.
Led by captain Frederick Egyir, the squad—featuring Isaac Nortey, Abubakari Yakubu-Lea, Samuel Agbesi Osei Antwi, and Rafael Dowouna—has been drawn in Pool A alongside hosts Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mauritius.
Their mission? Secure one of two promotion spots to Africa Group III after last year’s relegation.
Redemption quest after relegation heartbreak
The Golden Rackets suffered a setback in 2024, managing just one win in five matches and narrowly avoiding the bottom spot ahead of Côte d’Ivoire.
Now, with a refreshed lineup—including new additions Yakubu-Lea and Dowouna replacing Abraham Asaba and Lameck Bagerbaseh—Ghana is determined to bounce back.
Only Antwi, Nortey, and Egyir remain from last year’s campaign, adding experience to a team hungry for success.
Tough group stage ahead
Ghana’s opening match pits them against Mauritius, followed by a showdown with hosts Angola, before closing the group stage against the DR Congo.
A top-two finish would see them advance to a promotion playoff against Pool B’s best.
But if they falter, a relegation battle looms—with the risk of dropping to Africa Group V.
Why this matters
A strong showing in Luanda could reignite Ghana’s Davis Cup ambitions, putting them back on the African tennis map.
Fans will be watching closely as the Golden Rackets fight to reclaim their place among the continent’s elite.
