Golden Rackets sweep Mauritius aside in dominant Davis Cup Africa Group IV start
Ghana’s national tennis team, the Golden Rackets, made a commanding start to their Davis Cup Africa Group IV campaign with a resounding 3-0 victory over Mauritius on Wednesday, 11 June, in Luanda, Angola.
The team, determined to secure promotion back to Group III after last year’s relegation, delivered a flawless performance at the Academia de Ténis Kikuxi Villas Club.
A strong start for Ghana
Drawn in Pool A alongside hosts Angola, DR Congo, and Mauritius, the Golden Rackets wasted no time asserting their dominance.
Samuel Agbesi Osei Antwi set the tone in the opening singles match, overpowering Mauritius’ Daniel Bazu 6-4, 6-1. The win gave Ghana an early lead and set the stage for a dominant display.
Next up was Isaac Nortey, a key member of last year’s squad, who faced Rushil Seewoosurrun. Nortey’s clinical performance secured a straight-sets victory (6-2, 6-2), putting Ghana 2-0 ahead.
Doubles drama seals the sweep
The final fixture saw Nortey team up with Abubakari Yakubu-Lea in a thrilling doubles clash against Mauritius’ Samuel Ava and Anthony Kwok Yin Siong Yen.
After cruising through the first set 6-1, the Ghanaians faced a fierce fightback in the second, narrowly losing 7-6 in a tense tiebreak. But they regrouped in the decider, clinching the third set 6-3 to complete a clean sweep.
What’s next for the Golden Rackets?
Ghana’s next challenge is a crucial tie against hosts Angola, who lost their opener to DR Congo.
A win would put the Golden Rackets in a strong position to secure a top-two finish in the group and advance to the promotion play-offs.
However, a bottom-two finish could see them dragged into a relegation battle, with the risk of dropping to Africa Group V.
