Ghana’s President’s Cup chess tournament returns after two-year hiatus

After a two-year absence, Ghana’s most prestigious chess competition, the President’s Cup, is making a grand comeback.

The Ghana Chess Association (GCA) has confirmed the 13th edition of the championship will take place from 2-4 August 2024 at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra, promising fierce battles among West Africa’s finest chess talents.

A triumphant return for Ghana’s chess elite

The last President’s Cup, held in 2023 at the same venue, saw Ivorian player Marc Arnold Amako claim victory, with Ghana’s Candidate Master (CM) Bernard Anhwere and Ivorian FIDE Master (FM) De Gondo Simplice securing second and third places, respectively.

Now, the tournament is back with a GH₵12,000 prize pool, offering GH₵4,000 for first place, GH₵2,500 for second, and GH₵1,500 for third.

Additional prizes include GH₵1,200 for the top female player (if she scores at least half the overall points) and GH₵1,200 worth of prizes for the best under-18 competitor.

Registration is now open, with discounted fees for GCA paid members, women, and junior players at GH₵300. Non-members and foreign participants will pay GH₵450.
