Ghana’s national tennis team, the Golden Rackets, secured top spot in Pool A of the Davis Cup Africa Group IV after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over hosts Angola on Friday, 13 June, at the Academia de Ténis Kikuxi Villas Club in Luanda.

The win extends Ghana’s dominant run in the tournament, having already swept aside Mauritius and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The team is now one step closer to reclaiming a place in Africa Group III after last year’s relegation.

Ghana’s singles stars shine

Ghana’s Samuel Agbesi Osei Antwi set the tone early, overpowering Angola’s Joelson Armando Paulino 6-2, 6-0 in a commanding first singles match.

The momentum continued as Isaac Nortey dismantled Emerson Pedro 6-2, 6-1, sealing Ghana’s overall victory before the doubles.

Angola salvages pride in doubles

Despite the loss, Angola avoided a whitewash thanks to a spirited performance in the doubles.

The pair of Fernando Andre and Daniel Domingos fought back after dropping the first set to defeat Ghana’s Rafael Dowouna and Abubakari Yakubu-Lea 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, handing the Golden Rackets their first defeat of the competition.

What’s next for Ghana?

With eight wins and just one loss, Ghana finishes top of Pool A, while DR Congo takes second place after crushing Mauritius 3-0. Angola settles for third, with Mauritius at the bottom.

The Golden Rackets now advance to the promotion playoffs, where they will face Burundi, the runners-up in Pool B.

Meanwhile, DR Congo will take on Pool B winners Côte d’Ivoire. The two victorious nations will earn promotion to Africa Group III in 2025.

Can Ghana secure promotion?

After a near-flawless group stage, Ghana’s team is brimming with confidence. Fans will be hoping for a strong playoff performance to ensure their return to the higher tier of African tennis.
