Ghana Eagles crash out of Africa Men’s Sevens
Ghana’s national rugby union team, the Eagles, saw their hopes of securing a spot at the 2025 World Rugby Sevens Challenger come to an end after a hard-fought but ultimately disappointing run at the Africa Men’s Sevens tournament in Mauritius.
Held at the Labourdonnais Sports Club, the competition brought together some of the continent’s top teams, with Ghana facing stiff competition in Pool A against Uganda, Kenya, and Côte d’Ivoire.
Strong start, bitter end for Ghana
The Eagles began their campaign brightly, securing a 17-7 victory over Uganda in their opening match.
However, a dominant Kenya side brought them crashing back to earth with a 33-0 thrashing in their second game.
Undeterred, Ghana bounced back in style, whitewashing Côte d’Ivoire 33-0 to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
But their dream of reaching the World Rugby Sevens Challenger was dashed by a ruthless Zimbabwe, who overpowered them 36-0.
Despite the setback, the Eagles still had a chance to finish strong. A rematch against Uganda in the fifth-place playoff turned sour, as the Ugandans exacted revenge with a crushing 47-7 win.
Ghana’s final match saw them take on Nigeria in the seventh-place playoff, but their West African rivals edged them out 19-12, leaving the Eagles in eighth place overall.
South Africa crowned champions
The tournament was ultimately won by South Africa, who capped off a dominant campaign with a 28-12 victory over Madagascar in the final.
The Blitzboks reaffirmed their status as Africa’s leading rugby sevens side, securing their place in next year’s World Rugby Sevens Challenger.
What’s next for the Ghana rugby union?
While the Eagles fell short of their ultimate goal, their performances in Mauritius showcased both promise and areas for improvement.
With growing interest in rugby union across West Africa, Ghana will look to regroup and come back stronger in future competitions.
For now, the focus shifts to domestic development and preparing for the next opportunity to shine on the continental stage.
