Comoros Close Gap on Ghana in World Cup Qualifying After Chad Victory
Ghana’s grip on the top spot of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification group has loosened after Comoros secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Chad in their game in hand on Tuesday, March 25.
The win at the Stade Municipal de Berkane in Morocco sees Comoros reduce the Black Stars’ lead to just three points.
From the outset, both sides displayed attacking intent, launching forward in the opening exchanges. While neither team managed to establish firm control of possession, the midfield battle proved to be a fiercely contested affair.
The deadlock was eventually broken in the 25th minute by Comoros’ 25-year-old forward, Rafiki Saïd.
Capitalising on an opportunity in the box, Saïd unleashed a right-footed shot that evaded the grasp of Chad’s goalkeeper, Jourdain Mbaynassem.
Buoyed by the goal, Comoros pressed for a second before the interval, eager to extend their advantage. Chad, meanwhile, pushed their players higher up the pitch in search of an equaliser, hoping to surprise their hosts.
However, despite their efforts, neither team could carve out any clear-cut chances before the half-time whistle blew.
The second half began with a similar pattern, as both sides struggled to gain a decisive foothold in the match.
As the clock ticked down, Chad’s desperation grew, knowing that a point was crucial after a winless run in their World Cup qualification campaign so far.
Despite their urgency, Chad failed to create any meaningful opportunities, and Comoros also struggled to add to their single goal. Ultimately, the score remained unchanged, with Comoros clinching a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
This result has significant implications for Group I, as it puts pressure on Ghana, who had previously enjoyed a comfortable five-point lead.
The Black Stars will next face Chad away from home in September, a match that follows their emphatic 5-0 victory over the Central African nation in Accra on Friday, March 21. After that encounter, Ghana will host Mali in another crucial qualifier.
