Black Stars thrash Trinidad & Tobago 4-0 to clinch third place in Unity Cup
Ghana’s Black Stars ended their 2025 Unity Cup campaign on a high, dominating Trinidad and Tobago in a commanding 4-0 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, 31 May.
After a heartbreaking 2-1 semi-final defeat to rivals Nigeria earlier in the week, Otto Addo’s side responded in style, overpowering their Caribbean opponents to secure third place in the tournament.
Ayew inspires dominant display
Captain Jordan Ayew set the tone early, firing Ghana ahead in the sixth minute with a sublime curling strike from the edge of the box.
The Leicester City forward, given too much space by Trinidad’s defence, made no mistake, lashing in Abu Francis’ cutback with precision.
Just six minutes later, Ayew turned provider, delivering a pinpoint corner for Razak Simpson to powerfully head home.
The defender, who endured a nightmare own goal in the semi-final, redeemed himself with a towering finish to double Ghana’s lead.
Fuseini & Agyekum seal the win
Ghana struck again before half-time, with Ayew involved once more. The skipper teed up Mohammed Fuseini after a dazzling run from 19-year-old Caleb Yirenkyi, and the player coolly slotted home his first senior international goal.
The Black Stars weren’t done yet. Midfielder Lawrence Agyekum marked his own milestone moment in the 58th minute, cutting in from the left and squeezing a fierce shot through the legs of Trinidad’s goalkeeper, Jabari St Hillaire.
Redemption after Nigeria defeat
The comprehensive win provided a morale boost for Ghana after their semi-final disappointment.
Trinidad & Tobago, who lost 3-2 to Jamaica in their last-four clash, were outclassed as the Black Stars showcased their attacking flair.
With young talents like Yirenkyi and Agyekum shining alongside experienced stars like Ayew, Ghana’s future looks bright as they build towards upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
What’s next?
Ghana’s attention now turns to their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, where they’ll face Mali and Chad in September.
For Trinidad & Tobago, the focus shifts to the CONCACAF Gold Cup as they aim to bounce back from this heavy defeat.
