Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich made history on Sunday, 15 June, with a 10-0 demolition of New Zealand’s Auckland City in their Club World Cup opener at TQL Stadium, Cincinnati.

The result marks the biggest win in the tournament’s history, surpassing the previous record of 6-1.

A relentless first-half onslaught

The German champions wasted no time, with Kingsley Coman opening the scoring just six minutes in, nodding home from close range.

The floodgates opened quickly as Sacha Boey smashed in a half-volley from Coman’s knockdown to make it 2-0 by the 18th minute.

Michael Olise added a third, tapping in Thomas Müller’s cross at the far post. Just 60 seconds later, Coman struck again, drilling a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Veteran forward Müller, playing his final tournament for Bayern before departing this summer, then got on the scoresheet himself, steering in Olise’s cross.

The 35-year-old was instrumental throughout, setting up another for Olise, who curled in a superb sixth before half-time.

Musiala’s stellar cameo seals the rout

After a slower start to the second half, substitute Jamal Musiala – returning from a hamstring injury – made an instant impact.

The 22-year-old slotted in a seventh with a composed finish before converting a penalty after being fouled in the box.

Musiala wasn’t done yet, completing his hat-trick by pouncing on a loose ball in Auckland’s box.

With two minutes left, Müller capped off the historic night, slotting home Serge Gnabry’s cross to hit double digits.

A new benchmark in club football

Bayern’s 10-0 triumph eclipsed the previous Club World Cup record – Al Hilal’s 6-1 win over Al Jazira in 2022.

The result sends a strong message to their rivals as they eye a deep run in the tournament.

Vincent Kompany’s side next face Argentina’s Boca Juniors in their second Group C fixture on Saturday, 21 June, while Auckland City must regroup quickly before taking on Portuguese giants Benfica on Friday, 20 June.
