Atlético Madrid have reportedly turned down the opportunity to bring Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey back to the Spanish capital this summer—opting instead to pursue a €40m deal for Real Betis star Johnny Cardoso.

According to Estadio Deportivo, the LaLiga giants were approached about a potential reunion with the 31-year-old, who left Atlético for Arsenal in 2020.

However, Diego Simeone’s side declined, focusing their efforts on finalising a move for American midfielder Cardoso.

Arsenal exit likely after stalled talks

Partey, whose contract with the Premier League giants expires on 30 June, had been in talks over a new deal at the Emirates.

Despite injury struggles, Partey played a key role under Mikel Arteta last term, making 52 appearances across all competitions.

Since joining from Atlético in a €50 million deal, he has racked up 167 games for Arsenal, contributing nine goals and seven assists.

Arteta recently praised Partey’s improved fitness, calling the 2024/2025 season his most consistent in an Arsenal shirt.

Arsenal’s midfield reinforcements

Yet with no extension agreed, the Gunners are already planning for life without him.

Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is set to arrive as a direct replacement, while Sevilla’s Lucien Agoumé has also been linked as a midfield reinforcement.

What’s next for Partey?

With Atlético out of the running, Partey’s next move remains uncertain. Clubs in Saudi Arabia, Italy, and Turkey have previously shown interest—could a new suitor emerge before the transfer window closes?
