GOC hails Black Rockets after African Youth Championship sweep

Ghana’s national youth boxing team, the Black Rockets, have impressed at the 2025 African Youth Boxing Championship in Conakry, Guinea, sweeping gold medals in a dominant display.

The three-man team delivered a flawless performance at the continental tournament which was held from 16-25 May, with each boxer securing top honours in their weight categories.

Mathias Ashitey (51kg), Desmond Pappoe (75kg), and George Dowuona (54kg) – under the guidance of coach Joseph Martey – returned home as champions, cementing Ghana’s reputation in youth boxing.

GOC hails “proud moment for Ghana”

Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), praised the team’s discipline and determination, calling their success a milestone for Ghanaian sport.

“Winning gold medals in their respective weight categories is not only a testament to their discipline, talent, and determination but also a proud moment for Ghana as a sporting nation,” Akpokavie said in a statement.

He also credited the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) and coach Martey for their relentless efforts, saying their leadership was pivotal in securing this historic victory.

Bright future for Ghanaian boxing

The GOC reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing young boxing talent, hailing the Black Rockets’ triumph as proof of the sport’s potential in Ghana.

“The GOC is immensely proud of this victory,” Akpokavie added. “And we remain fully committed to supporting the development of boxing and youth sports in Ghana. Your triumph is a clear indication of the bright future ahead for Ghanaian boxing.”

The championship in Conakry, Guinea, saw emerging talents from across Africa compete, but Ghana’s trio stood out with their technical skill and composure.

With this success, all eyes are now on the young champions as they prepare for future competitions, including potential appearances at the Youth Olympics and World Championships.

For now, Ghana celebrates a new generation of boxing heroes – and the promise of even greater achievements ahead.
